About this Tee

  1. Off the cost of Sumatra. An ominous silhouette appears on the horizon. His Imperial Highness' Naval fleet creeps in for the kill.

One of my first designs of last year. No reason for it, it just all came together one day.

Yeah, that's what I was gonna ask, if they can print shirts like that. What with the being all over the sleeves and sides and whatnot. That would be all kinds of awesome if they could.

maclac

yeah they probably cant but I guess if it gets picked up I could provide an alt cut of the image that hits the body only (or something). Thanks for your comment.

Thanks, it's one of the few not influenced by star wars or other genre stuff. Just a random idea that I had to commit to file. :)

Brilliant. SO rare to see just a design, proves you don't need to reference any thing just so long as its good. I desperately hope this gets printed. Always nice to see different things.

(do you have any other designs/places you submit them eg r*db*bbl* of t**f*ry?)

r*db*bbl*, my good man. http://www.r*db*bbl*.com/people/maclac (there is a smaller version of this one there too (looks pretty good in print - have one myself ;) )

cheers!

(Though I would get your hopes up on this one as is - likely too big a print)

Call me Buzz Killington, I know the designer said there is no reason for it, but the imperialist flag of Japan?!
This symbolises a Japanese regime who committed mass atrocities as bad or worse than the Nazis. It's highly offensive for many Asian people. Honestly, you might as well stick a beautifully stylized swastika on a shirt.

Actually if you do a bit of research, you will find out that it is actually the flag of the Japanese navy. Here you go:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Japanese_flags
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japan_Maritime_Self-Defense_Force

A flag that is still used today.

If you spent some time in the region, you'd realise it is still very offensive - just because it is still being used doesn't make it any less so. In fact, the flag was banned by the Allies after WW2, before being reinstated by an obstinate Japanese navy years later.

The West may be fascinated by Japanese pop culture, but that is no excuse to ignore or ignorantly glamorise symbols of the atrocities they committed and refuse to apologise for.

O there is absolutely no denying (on my part) that atrocities where caused and not owned up for (remember though on both sides).

Also it was my understanding that the flag was less banned by the west and more the general military was (and flags where included among that much larger ban).

However I admit that I have not spent much time in Japan (a single holiday) but might I ask how is the navy particularly connected to war crimes. I mean I haven't heard of the Japanese navy being particularly brutal (in context of the whole war thing), to such an extant that people find its very symbol offensive I mean aside from shelling cities from afar I'm not sure how many atrocities the navy could commit (whether the will to commit them given the opportunity I don't know)

LIke it/don't like it - s'up to you all. As I said it's just a design that I find rather fetching. So much so that I have it for myself on a t-shirt (r*db*bbl*) and have an iPhone 4 case on the way with it printed on (from Society6).

I doubt this version will see print due to the size, whether it get votes or not. But, if it gets votes then folk obviously like it.

As for atrocities. Don't forget it was us Occidentals (well, more specifically the US) that threw out those atomic bombs - still the only time such weapons have been used in aggression. It may have ended the war but still an atrocity.

Let there be no more said about this.

Cheery comments from now on, please.

Hi Malc,

This design could not be printed as it, we have a limit of 300 x 400 mm for normal prints, ie something like this: http://www.r*db*bbl*.com/people/maclac/t-shirts/6335375-ijn-alternate

Aye, I thought that but no way to alter the submission to so how that would look. I can create a new sub with a properly sized image if you want? How far down the shirt can you print? to the hem?

I dont like this at all, its rather offensive. This flag was banned after WW2 and to say oh its just a navy flag is not true this is deeply offensive. This does not symbolise just the Japanese Navy. Very nice design however I wouldnt dream of wearing it and I am a bit suprised to see it to be honest. Are we having a swastika next and being told that its a hindu symbol of life?

Was really looking forward to getting this but I don't like the colour for the girls one! Why can't they both be yellow?? :(

To say that the flag has been banned is somewhat disingenuous; the design is still used by the Japanese Maritime Self-Defence Force as their ensign. Granted, there is a whole heap of baggage that goes with this flag and I fully understand that the design might not sit comfortably with some.

jammacjam05

Ok fair enough, I honestly didnt know it was still used. Its not really the symbol of the Maritime Self-Defence Force that its being used though is it. When the name of it is imperial and there are old planes in the picture? Its more widely recognised as the flag of imeperial Japan (and I think it was banned). Its in bad taste and I wouldnt wear it in most of Asia as it would be considered very offensive.

Thanks Guys, I think we already had quite a bit of discussion on this which the artist dealt with above, there is no offence meant by it.

Buying!! Its really nice. I understand where people are coming from, but what slate16 said is right...we just need to get over it a bit. In the end, the symbol and style here is meant to be beautiful, and a homage, and I think it hits the mark.

Sorry, but what exactly are we "paying homage" to, a brutal regime that was as brutal to the people they conquered as the Germans? Sorry to the admin, but I find this shirt offensive and disrespectful, both to those abused by the Japanese Empire and our own military. I agree with other posters in stating that this is analogous to wearing a shirt with a swastika. I hope people that buy this shirt happen to come across some elderly Chinese folk who were around during WWII and who can enlighten them on the "beauty" of this image.

The Rising Sun is an ancient symbol, and was used my the regime in a war that they fought in the style that was passed onto them by their ancestors. From what I know, the symbol has no military meaning, and was used as a national symbol for CENTURIES! As Qwertee said, they debated this, and decided its fine. I side with them. The Japanese army AND people used this symbol for hundreds of years, and yes it is offensive to some, but so is the American Flag in many Middle Eastern countries. WWII was unfortunate, but you seem to forget that we (the allies) used atomic weaponry on the Japanese people, brutally killing hundreds of thousands of CIVILIANS. That to me is worse than what the Japanese people did. Far worse.

Let it go, and if you don't like it, don't buy it.

WHY DID YOU HAVE TO MAKE THE FEMALE VERSION WHITE!!!

I would have bought this if it were yellow...

its a shame as I LOVED this shirt and voted for it!

Whilst offensive to some I don't see this as being on the same level as the flag of the Nazi Party. Just an opinion.
Moving away from the debate, I do think this is a strong design and worthy of a print here on Qwertee. Congrats to Malc.
